About Dorothy Harding

Dorothy Harding was born to poverty and racism in the backwoods of Alabama.  Beyond the drudgery of helping to work a family farm, she attended a small Pentecostal Holiness congregation at a time when the voice of Mahalia Jackson brought solace and hope to communities across the South.  Fear of an alcoholic, abusive father led her to flee to Saginaw, Michigan whose own mean streets eventually landed her in prison.  There she had a transforming encounter with the risen Christ and upon her release found welcome and nurture in a Mennonite congregation.  In time, her voice raised in gospel song inspired communities not only in the Midwest but coast-to-coast and abroad.  In addition to concert events, Dorothy has devoted herself to ministry with at-risk young people and city dwellers in Saginaw, Atlanta, Mobile, and many other cities across the nation.  She has come to be known as the ‘Mennonite Mahalia’, and now lives in semi-retirement near her roots in Alabama.  Most of her growing family live in metro Atlanta.
